When to hit the reset button

"We all need to hit the reset button from time to time.

mental reset buttonFor me the time was this weekend, the weekend of no alarms in the morning and a little bit of downtime for the first time in months. 3 weeks since finishing my monster half marathon trail run, and after travel, hurricanes, and other commitments- I took an intentional time out.

I slept in. I went to the beach. I took naps. I netflixed and enjoyed couch time and college football.

And yet after a couple weeks without a hard and fast fitness plan, I was itching to get back on some sort of routine after this space off.

Because Mondays are the official 'start something new' trigger day, I did just that- I made a plan. I made a commitment to myself and made time for the first structured workout of a new 12 week plan today.

At the beginning... I'll admit I looked at the workout and doubted if I could or wanted to finish all 4 rounds of the prescribed exercise. I hadn't really picked up weights intentionally in 3-4 weeks. And yet, once I got into it, I got back in my groove and was done before I knew it, and wondering why I put it off so long.

Starting is always the hardest part. And sometimes we get stuck beating ourselves up for NOT doing the thing that we said we were going to start... which prevents us from starting again!

But once you take that first step, you find out it's not so bad as the picture you painted in your head, and if nothing else, you feel pretty good just from taking action.

To anyone thinking 'I'll start next Monday" I encourage you to get take one step in the direction you want to go! The next ones get easier, and there's no shame in hitting the reset button and starting over if you've been out of it for a while. We all do it!
