Ugh! Stretch marks! Those unsightly, daily reminders of how “flawed” your body is. This might sound a bit dramatic but my guess is it’s not far off from what goes through your mind when you see or think of your stretch marks.

Last week on the blog we shared founder Katrina's personal story about a 10-year struggle with body image as she worked her way back to health and fitness. Regardless of your age, shape or size, body image is a real challenge for many women. Stretch marks are one of those challenges because there has been such a stigma built up regarding them.

Here's the truth: YOU are NOT your stretch marks.

Stretch marks are like any other scar. They are merely a reflection of something in your past but they have NOTHING to do with the shape of your future. Your stretch marks could be from you starting a family and bringing a child into the world. You could have experienced a loss or a period of major stress or sadness. It could be a happy memory, like starting a new relationship and eating out frequently as part of the courtship. Or if you're like Katrina, you could have spent six months studying abroad in Barcelona where there's a pastry shop on every corner and mouth-watering food at every meal. Stretch marks are not indicative to any specific body type, healthy people have them, athletes have them. My point is, why is there such a negative connotation associated with stretch marks?

Stretch marks are just a physical illustration of your history, a remnant of your past. They tell your story and like most lessons from history, there is only value if you accept it, learn from it and move on. You cannot live in the past. And your past does not have to dictate your future. If you look ahead, you absolutely have the power to create the future you desire.

Stretch marks serve to paint a picture of how you have been shaped by your past but they don’t need to have any bearing on who you are as a person. Embrace your body and your past but don't get stuck looking in the rear-view mirror. There is more to you than your scars, so own your story and take action to write the next chapter.
