When did movement stop being fun? A personal trainer's perspective

When did exercise and moving our wonderful, amazing bodies become such a chore to be dreaded? When did it stop being play, being sport, being fun?

I wanted to follow up my previous post about working out being too much work with a different link of thinking. I believe some of the apprehensions adults have with joining an exercise program has to do with the culture we’ve created about doing everything as aggressively as possible.

The mantras of ‘No Pain, No Gain’ and ‘Still Sore & Back For More’ have painted fitness with the image that if it is to be effective, it must be sweat-pouring, nauseating, deblitatingly painful, about ready to pass out, high intensity. All the time. Otherwise it’s a waste or ‘doesn’t count.’ The truth of the matter is most of us would be healthier and feel better if we just moved a little bit more, a little bit more often. We’d feel better if we approached our bodies with love and respect, instead of revulsion and aggression.

We’d all be better off if we could find joy in movement the way we did as kids. To a kid, recess is a delight. The joy of playing tag, running, jumping, climbing, kicking a ball, just plain moving is a natural thing. How did we lose this joy? And how can we get it back? I don’t believe there is a one size fits all answer to that, but I think the key lies in making movement fun. For some of us, that means a social workout, as part of a community that builds you up and encourages you. That’s the reFORM Studios Personal Training solution, anyway. For others perhaps the answer lies in rediscovering childhood loves, such as dance or sport, and finding an adult outlet or learning a new activity. For some it may mean reconnecting with the great outdoors, going kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, or hiking. I want to challenge you to think back, to your youth, when movement was a part of daily life, and remember- what was the most fun activity you participated in? Did you live the simplicity of running? Did you love the camaraderie of team sport? Did you love the challenge of learning a new skill of strength? Did you love feeling graceful with dance? Did you love the sunshine pouring through the trees playing outside? I hope you can reconnect with a positive feeling about movement, and then latch onto it to make it part of your life again. When you’re having fun, ‘working out’ doesn’t feel like work at all.
