When Working Out Is Too Much Work : A Personal Trainer's Perspective

I happened to be attending a local employer’s health fair last week, to meet with the employees and discuss their health and fitness goals, answer their burning workout questions, and even do a giveaway for a free month of personal training. And while I had some great conversations with some of the people I met, I have to confess the day made me a little sad. So many of the people passing by my table where I was offering a few month of training took one look at the banner and then, in an embarrassed or defensive kind of way, proclaimed that what I was offering was ‘too much work.’ That fitness is too much work. That healthy living is too much work. That exercise is too much work. Or that reaching their goals is too much work. Apparently even entering a contest for free personal training services is too much work.

It makes me sad, because I believe in my heart that what we do at my personal training studio is more than workout- we change lives. We improve quality of life. We reduce medications. We improve self-image and self-confidence. We reduce health risks and increase life spans. We make it easier to have and grow families, and enjoy more quality time with them. We just happen to do all this through fitness and nutrition coaching to address the lifestyle that led to challenges in the first place. And yet, even though I am sad, I understand. The truth is, change IS work. Working out is actually the easiest part of what we do. All you have to do is show up, and you are guided and instructed in how to move for 30 minutes, then you go home. That’s easy. But change, real lasting change, that’s hard.

We are creatures of habit, for better or for worse. Most of us that have health and fitness goals have them because the lifestyle we’ve been living was formed on habits that aren’t in alignment with our goals. And those habits will take consistent and mindful effort to change. And the truth is, change WILL NOT HAPPEN until you are ready to do some work. Until your goal is so important to you that’s its more painful to stay the same than to change. It doesn’t have to be dreadful or hard or take forever, you just have to be ready to take the first step, and commit to moving TOWARDS your goals.

So to any of you who aren’t there yet, that’s ok. We will be here when you are ready to finally take that first step to a better you. We will be here when you are ready to shed the pounds that have been weighing you down. We will be here when you are ready to get off all those pills and prescriptions. We will be here when you are ready to climb a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing. We will be here when you are ready. It's your move.
