Harness the power of mindset to achieve your goals in 2015!

The mind is a powerful thing. From coaching practices to pop culture, the power of mindset and your personal belief systems is everywhere, from saying mantras and affirmations in the mirror to the more cerebral ideas like the movies Inception and the Matrix.

"Your mind makes it real." -Morpheus, The Matrix

Yes, your mindset can be either your greatest asset in achieving your goals, or your greatest handicap. A positive, open, resilient mindset happens when you tell yourself "You can, you will, you're capable, you're worth it." and so on. A negative, closed, or limiting mindset happens when the thoughts in your head are telling yourself things like "This is never going to work. You're going to fail. You're not ready. You can't do this." Negative mindsets tend to be based on fears and doubts, and anchored in limiting belief about yourself. They are powerfully emotionally charged, which is why they can derail you when you are working towards goals but meet a challenge.

So how do you go about changing your mindset? A good place to start is by digging in and identifying your limiting beliefs. What nasty negative things do your hear yourself whispering in your head? Accept that these are not true, that you have the power to change anything you hear up there. When you have a negative thought flash through your mind, re-frame it with a positive spin. For example, "I don't know what I'm doing" could become "I don't know what I'm doing YET, but I'm learning and I can figure it out!" or "I don't have the answers, but I can research and find someone who does."

The important thing is to recognize those negative thoughts and beliefs, and work on re-framing them in a positive light. The same goes if you find you call yourself negative derogatory names. You wouldn't allow friends to call you that, would you? So don't allow yourself to be derogatory either. Being mindful of what words and thoughts you use is the first place to start to make change. Then start focusing daily on actively generating positive thoughts and beliefs and rebuilding a positive mindset. Find positive, affirming answers to questions like:

  • What are some things from your past that you are proud of?
  • What do you do really well?
  • What positive adjectives can you think of to describe yourself? Or what positive words do you hear others describing you with?

Another helpful trick to get yourself thinking in a positive frame of mind daily is to start a journal where every morning you write down 3 things your are looking forward to that day, and if you want to keep the trend going, every evening write down 3 things you are grateful for or three positive notes from the day. You'll be amazed how you can train your brain to start looking for positives and recognizing the positives in your life instead of the negatives with just a few of these tips! So as you tackle 2015 and year ahead, make sure you've got your mindset fully on board with your goals! It's your secret weapon!
