Fitbit Wireless Activity Tracker

The New Flex: Wireless Activity Tracker If you haven’t heard of Fitbit before you may be wondering just what on earth is it. You may have even seen people walking around with funny looking bands on and wondered what they are. Well they are not just a fashion accessory (although fashionistas are getting in on the action! More on that later...) They are actually a really great tool aimed at helping you be more active and achieve your health and fitness goals. So the idea behind them fits right in with our way of thinking here at reFORM Studios. Before you ask, no the Fitbit Flex band (shown above, and what I use) does NOT give you electric shocks or anything like that when you are about to eat something bad. No alarms sound, and it doesn't flash derisive quips if you aren't as active as you should be.

SO, What Does Fitbit Flex Do?

In its simplest form it measures movement. It track the number steps you take each day, records it and show you in nice graphical formats on your phone or computer. It will show you periods of the day when you moved a lot, or on the flip side, if you sat for 8 hours and didn't budge. I am always saying I want you to move more and this is great tool to show EXACTLY how far, how often, or how little, you have actually moved. fitbit activity tracker

Keep Up With Your Friends

You've heard the saying that you are an average of the 5 people you hang around the most? Well Fitbit helps you hang with your more active friends who are active Fitbit users. You can add them to your circle and see how much activity they are getting in. From here you can start friendly competitions and accountability check-ins. I know of some offices who have started a Fitbit steps competition with prizes, and reFORM Studios is forming a private Fitbit group that will be doing similar fun challenges. Just think- if you know your friend who has a busy job, kids, and other responsibilities took 15 minutes to get an extra walk in to meet her goal, aren't you more likely and more motivated to go do something a little extra yourself? Fitbit has created a really positive way to keep up with your friends. It also send you little rewards based on your activity, like a high five when you hit a new activity goal or cross a cumulative miles walked milestone. And everyone like a high five.

What Else Does The Fitbit Flex Do?

  • Track Steps. All the time it’s tracking you, telling you how much you have moved. I am not going to lie this can be scary sometimes, at how little you have moved, but it's good feedback.
  • Track Workouts. Fitbit can tell how intense you are working out during most workout sessions. For example, it knows if you are running, jogging, or walking, and will pick up some calisthenics like jumping jacks and boxing drills since your arm is moving. It even knew how far I cycled one day and gave me credit for the distance and intensity of that workout.
  • Estimate Your Caloric Needs. Because Fitbit knows exactly how much you are moving, it can give you a much more accurate estimate of how many calories you are burning on any given day. BONUS- It connects to MyFitnessPal and adjusts your calorie goals for you!
  • Track Sleep. Flex never sleeps, even when you do. Continue to wear it all night and it’ll measure your sleep quality. Your dashboard will reveal how long you slept and the number of times you woke up to help you learn how to sleep more soundly. Flex also has a silent wake alarm that gently vibrates to wake you at your desired time, without disturbing your partner.
  • Track Food. You can use Fitbit's food journal, but it does also sync nicely with MyFitnessPal if you're already using that app for food journaling.
  • Set Your Goals. If you are aiming to reach 10,000 steps and get 8 hours sleep, tell the band and it will tell when you reach your goals, and when you don’t :-). It will say you have achieved 90% of sleep goal, 60% of your steps and your food is an 8/10 today. You can even adjust your goals as you get more active.

Apps that Fitbit Syncs With

Fitbit plays nice with various other apps on your phone such as LoseIt, Runkeeper, MapMyFitness, MyFitnessPal, Endomondo, and more. It syncs easily through wireless and Bluetooth, so no need to plug in except to recharge every few days!

I really like the Fitbit Flex band, and if you use it, it will help you achieve your goals. So go grab one, put it on your wrist and start using it. The Flex is just $99 and free shipping.

I want to stress that point again….IF YOU USE IT, it will help you achieve your goals :-)If you leave it in the box or wear it every now and again it won’t be effective; you've got to put it on and track everything.

So consider joining the reFORM team and grab a band now, you have a couple options, they all come in different colors, and shipping is free! If you're not a fan of the look of the classic rubber Flex bands, then fear not- Tory Birch has partnered with Fitbit and is offering a high-fashion bracelet option beginning in September!
