7 Ways To Stay Motivated On Your Fitness Journey

Simple tricks for the tough days

Regardless of if you're just getting started, or you've been following a fitness routine or working towards a health goal for a while, the odds are you've had at least one challenging day in the last week and a half. So today I want to discuss mindset and motivation for a minute. Let's start with a quote from Zig Ziglar: "People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily." need motivation to exerciseIt's a slightly humorous perspective on the issue of motivation, but absolutely true. The surest way to succeed at any goal is to find a way to stay motivated to reach it, and this needs to be a daily process. It's very easy after a challenging day or when life throws us a curveball to lose sight of our goals, and lose the motivation to stick to the progress and changes we're making, to throw in the towel and say 'I don't care' or 'it's too hard' or 'I can't deal with this today.' Renewing your motivation will help you over and around those hurdles. And because motivation is a slippery, constantly changing thing, you may need more than one 'go-to' to renew your commitment and dedication to your personal goals. (Being chased by a T-rex should of course be a last resort... ;) )   We've compiled a fun and easy list of 7 ways to stay motivated along your personal journey towards optimal health and fitness. There are plenty of ideas to refresh and renew that sense of motivation for yourself! Here are 7 of our favorites for you to consider:
  1. Open a Pinterest account, and save motivational and inspirational quotes and images. Save them as your computer desktop image and cell phone background, so when you turn to distract yourself or procrastinate they'll be right in front of you. Choose images that speak to your specific motivation drainers - time, energy, mood, body image, distraction with other life events, social scene... You will instinctively gravitate to the messages YOU need to hear.
  2. Take that idea one step further, and create a vision board from magazine clippings and a poster board about your goals, your ideal lifestyle, all the things that are important to you, and hang it somewhere you will see every day. (bathroom, closet, office are good options) Imagine all the aspects of the life you are working towards, from relationships, to work, to image, to social, to details around the home, even to hobbies.
  3. Surround yourself with positive and encouraging people, absorbing positive energy from being with them will help you stay positive. (the flip side- if you find yourself in a negative group, excuse yourself and leave that environment!) If you don't have a positive group or buddy, consider joining a class or attending a free group workout with us.
  4. Write down a list of 3+ actions you can take daily that will help you progress towards your goal, and then focus your energy on the actions and what you can control, and not on stress about the things you can't control.
  5. If you catch your internal voice saying something negative about yourself, consciously think of something positive about yourself instead. Give yourself a compliment daily! This one small habit can have a drastic affect on your positive self-image and moods.
  6. Acknowledge small accomplishments and milestones, celebrate every success. This doesn't mean celebrate with a triple layer chocolate fudge cake and a case of wine, so think about constructive ways to celebrate that are in alignment with your goals. Would a new cute workout outfit make you feel great? How about a new cookbook or gadget for the kitchen? Maybe just time getting together with your positive support group for a walk or beach day? Plan in advance how you will celebrate your successes, and remind yourself of that reward in moments where you need a pick me up.
  7. Spend a few minutes visualizing what you're working towards. How will you feel? Where will you go? What will you wear?  Who will you be with, and what will you do after you've reached your goal? Putting yourself into the frame of mind of already having achieved what you want will actually make you more likely to get there! Think about all the athletes that visualize their winning races... the body considers this practice and make the actual challenge feel easier!
Nothing changes until the mind changes, so focus today on making sure your mind has a clear vision of your goal, and a positive approach for getting you there! Believe you will get there and appreciate all the little steps along the way. These 7 ways to stay motivated are just the tip of the iceberg, so start here and keep exploring new and creative methods to refocus and refuel your motivation. Life is more about the journey, not the destintion- learn to appreciate the process and progress of changing your body, your lifestyle, and your mindset for the better!
