Sleep Your Way to Better Health!

When you don't get enough sleep, leptin (the hormone that regulates feeling full) decreases, and grehlin  (the hormone that regulates hunger) increases. Additionally, your basal metabolic rate (energy expenditure) decreases, meaning your body conserves energy and saves calories to help you function. Improve your sleep with these 8 tips:
  1. Establish a routine. Try to find relaxing habits before bed.
  2. Keep a regular schedule. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.
  3. Cool off- keeping the room temperature low enhances melatonin production.
  4. Avoid eating right before sleep. Aim to eat your last meal 2-3 hours before bed.
  5. Exercise regularly, best early in the day or late in the afternoon.
  6. Limit caffeine 6-8 hours before bed to help improve sleep quality.
  7. Avoid alcohol- alcohol impacts REM sleep, which is important for memory.
  8. Turn off electronics. Use the time to let your brain and body relax!
